Dear valued NASAA Organic Members and NCO Operators,
Announcement from the Organic Development Group (ODG) regarding Domestic Regulation
I am writing to share an exciting update from the Organic Development Group (ODG) regarding addressing a significant outcome for the organic industry: domestic regulation of the term “Organic”. NASAA Organic has played a pivotal role in this initiative for over 12 months, actively engaging with the nine largest industry organisations representing Australian organic producers, manufacturers, wholesalers, and retailers, as well as in the governing Secretariat.
The group convened most recently in early September 2024 in Canberra to discuss a proposal for establishing a unified Industry Standard for domestic organic and biodynamic products.
Encouragingly, a substantial majority of ODG members have expressed their support for the proposed approach. Efforts are underway to achieve the next milestone in the journey for domestic regulation by the end of this year. Constructive discussions with MPs and Senators from all parties have fostered a positive and promising atmosphere for advancing the certified organic and biodynamic industry. The ODG look forward to sharing more specific updates with you soon.
Members of the Organic Development Group include representatives from each of these organisations:
- ACO Certification Ltd (ACO)
- Australian Organic Limited (AOL)
- Bio-Dynamic Research Institute (BDRI)
- Certified Organic Biodynamic Western Australia (COBWA)
- National Association for Sustainable Agriculture Australia (NASAA)
- NASAA Certified Organic (NCO)
- Organic and Regenerative Investment Co-operative (ORICOOP)
- Organic Food Chain (OFC)
- Southern Cross Certified (SXC)
Although the ODG’s primary focus is on domestic regulation, its collaborative efforts have resulted in achievements beyond this goal. Joint events, partnerships, information sharing, collaborative training programs, and mutual support have strengthened the industry, ensuring sustained health and longevity. These developments reflect our collective dedication to the future of the organic sector.
At NASAA Organic, we remain focussed on the future of the industry, seeing opportunities at every turn and looking forward to sharing more updates soon, both from the ODG and NASAA Organic.
Kind Regards,
