Exciting news from the Organic Development Group – The National Organic Standard Bill 2024 has been introduced to the Senate!
We have very exciting news to share on behalf of NASAA and the Organic Development Group (ODG).
On Tuesday 19th November, an important first milestone in our industry’s pursuit of domestic regulation of the term “organic” was achieved with the “National Organic Standard Bill 2024” listed and read into the Senate.
This is an exciting milestone for our industry on the path to domestic regulation. It’s taken years of hard work from many organisations and individuals within the industry to achieve this, and one which we should all take a moment to celebrate!
If passed, this Bill would establish the National Standard for Organic and Bio-Dynamic Produce as the mandatory domestic certification standard for businesses selling organic products in Australia.
This would provide protection for certified organic operators, opportunities to discuss equivalency with overseas markets and a gateway to further development of the industry.
In order to raise awareness, garner maximum support of the proposed Bill from all sides of politics and give it the best chance of being passed, NASAA along with our industry partners in the Organic Development Group (ODG), encourage members, organic operators and consumers to raise their voices to highlight why domestic regulation is so important for consumer protection and to facilitate new growth in our industry.
In order to help you with this, over coming days we will provide a suite of resources which will be available for anyone wishing to lend their support to this important cause – this will include letters you can send to your local MP and the Minister for Agriculture (Julie Collins), social media resources and more.
We are here to support you in this, so if you have any concerns or questions, please feel free to reach out with any questions.
